![]() ![]() The province used to be called Périgord and today people from Dordogne are often referred to as Périgoudins. Its permanent population is less than two million. Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne is set on a wooded valley in the upper part of the Dordogne River, in the Corrèze department. ![]() Umayyad and Aquitanian forces fought the Battle of the River Garonne in 732 beside the river near present-day Bordeaux. Away from the rivers, the fertile soils of the Dordogne are home to poultry farms and truffle-filled woods. Its basin area is 56,000 km 2 (22,000 sq mi), which increases to 84,811 km 2 (32,746 sq mi) if the Dordogne River, which flows from the east and joins the Garonne at Bec d'Ambs to form the Gironde estuary, is included. The fauna is also rich and diverse: otters, ducks. To the east, the land around the rivers flows through gorges and valleys. As proof of the waters cleanliness, grass beds with pretty white flowers blossom every summer in the river. Population centres are based mainly along the region's rivers, as historically they provided transportation routes for export. Over 100,000 hectares of land are dedicated to vines. It is divided into two by the River Dordogne which founded the historic frontier. Divided into four areas- the Périgord Noir (Black), the Périgord Blanc (White), the Périgord Vert (Green) and the Périgord Pourpre (Purple), the geography and natural resources of the Périgord make it a beautiful, unspoiled region rich in history and wildlife. The Dordogne is the major river that flows through the region, coming from the Auvergne mountains where the Dore and the Dogne join, to the Garonne estuary just north of Bordeaux. The Tarn and the Aveyron flow into the river Lot which is the major river in the south, again reaching the Garonne and then flowing out to the Atlantic. ![]()
